How to Study Math and Physics Effectively

At school I was useless at math. So was Albert Einstein I believe. Many years after leaving school I enrolled in a distance learning course at a university for a diploma in datametrics. I did well in all the computer courses, but I had to do a module in physics as well. I went to write the exam and managed to get a magnificent 38%.
The University allowed me to rewrite a supplementary exam, and I had two months to get myself sorted out. I had already learnt the work with all my heart. Two months later I rewrote the exam, and passed with a mark of 88% ! This enabled me to pass the Diploma cum laude, with distinction.

Well, I discovered a secret to learning subjects that involve figures, numerical problems and the like. The secret is simple: practice.
The text book I was working out of had the answers to all the problems at the back of the book. So I tried to do the sums without looking at the answer. Then I would check. If the answer was wrong, I would try again, using a different approach. If that didn't work out, then I would start with the answer and work backwards to the start. I solved every question that I could find. I practiced and practiced.
I worked in pencil, with an eraser handy, so that if the sum got messy I could clean it up. I used lots of scrap paper. It was hard work, but after awhile the elation of solving more and more questions first time round started making it a breeze to do.
So to summarize:
1. Get a book with lots of problems to solve in it. Make sure it has the answers in the book.
2. Only look at the answers to check if you got it right. Try to solve it first before looking at the answer at all.
3. If you can't get it right, try again.
4. If you still can't get it right, start with the answer and work backwards.
5. Do every problem you can find. Do them again if you are not yet confident.
6. Be prepared to work hard, and it will pay off big time.
Just the other day I gave this advice to a granny who was looking after her 14 year old granddaughter. This young girl was failing math and Granny couldn't help her much.

Work responsibilities and the travel that came with them made attending classes next to impossible, so online education seemed to be the best option. Over the next six years, I completed both a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree online. It was a great experience and I now moderate online classes for the college where I also teach. Here are some of my tips for success in online education.

1. Pick a Great School
If you are going to make a significant investment in time and money to get an education online, make sure the school you choose is a good one. Of course it should be accredited, but also, check with potential employers to see if they recognize the credentials you will have when you graduate. Check both private and public institutions as they each have their own pros and cons. Don't limit your search for the right school to a single country. The Internet makes education a global experience.

2. Remember That You Still Have to Read
Sometimes when people sign up for an online course, they think that somehow information will be transferred to them electronically. There will be books and articles in addition to the material you get online. You can't get an education without reading.

3. Engage in Discussions Online and Offline
Many courses have discussion boards and chat rooms as a part of the program. In some cases, there may be sharing of email addresses to facilitate discussion. Participate in these discussions as much as possible. The discussion board is your classroom. You will learn as much from other students as you will from the course itself.

4. If Possible, Combine Your Online Studies With Traditional Classes
If you live in a town or city with a college or university, check and see if there are any courses that you can take part-time and fit into your online degree program. It is possible that your school will have affiliations with other schools. Some face-to-face instruction and discussion is not necessary for your success, but it will round out your experience.

5. Spend Some Time On Your Course Every Day
Read material when you're riding on the bus. Get up a bit early and check what's on discussion boards. If you try and find a couple of hours to dedicate to study, you may never get it done.

6. Take One Course At A Time
Usually in online education, you can take courses at your own rate of speed. If you focus on one course at a time, and finish each course in a shorter timeframe, you will likely finish your degree sooner than if you overload yourself with several courses at the same time.

7. Look For Resources at Traditional Universities
Universities that don't have online course may still have tremendous resources on their websites. Check these sites and you will be amazed at the information you find.

8. Learn To Become an Online Detective
Researching papers and assignments will be a part of your online program. Learn to follow your nose around the Internet to find the information you need. Search engines are getting overwhelmed with commercial sites, so learn to use academic search engines, and similar resources. If you find an article of particular interest, chances are the author is working at a university somewhere and has an email address posted on their website. Send an email with a few questions about the article.

There should be no doubt in anybody's mind that the job marketplace is changing rapidly. When jobs are available, the desired candidates have a degree that directly relates to the job they are interviewing for. Brief History
Founded in 1916 by Lucy Sprague Mitchell the institute originally focused on educational experiment and child development. A nursery school was opened in 1918. Formal training of teachers commences only from the year 1930 and it marked the beginning of shaping of the present Bank Street College of Education. A unique contribution of the college was development of "Bank Street Readers" books featuring racial diversity in 1965. Important contribution was made by the college in commencing the Federal Head Start Program. A bookstore providing quality educational materials for both children and educators is the highlight of the campus.
Programs Offered
One of the best institutes listed in New York college directory for imparting training to private and public school teachers, it currently has three programs. Graduate school of education, children's program, and Division of Continuing Education are the three programs offered by it. While the children's program has the school, nursery, and family center that serves children in the age group of 0.6 - 5 years, the school works in collaboration with Center Against Domestic Violence.
Admission
Applicants having GPA of at least 3.0 or B average or higher and having full preparation can apply for graduation courses culminating in master's degrees. Applicants should fulfill the criteria for breadth and depth distribution in liberal arts and sciences. Separate criteria have been set up for Middle School Education program, undergraduate courses and advanced Master of Education in special courses. Since then the man has been climbing icy mountains. He has navigated deep seas. He has traversed moon. His machines have even touched Mars. Man, it is inside you!

How to Define Nature VS Nurture Theories
There are three distinctive schools of thought.
1- Personality is Natural
This group believes that your personality is result of evolutionary process. You inherit behaviors due to complex interaction of genes. They control your behaviors. 2- Personality is Nurtured
This group argues that you don't get your personality inherited. Your mind is a blank slate at your birth. It is your environment, education and culture that make up your behaviors. There are differences on the issue of 'free will' to change your behaviors.
3- Personality is Spiritual
This group claims that your personality is result of neither nature nor nurture. It is gift of some deity. They are split on the issue of 'free will'.
Nature VS Nurture Theories and Evolutionary Psychology

Darwin's theory of evolution led William Hamilton, George Williams and many others to the idea of personality evolution. They proposed that like physical organs, your personality is result of natural selection for survival of the fittest. You do as your genes dictate.
They suggest that fear of death, fear of injury, fear of snakes, shyness, addiction, criminality and sexual orientation are main examples of inheritable behaviors. Steven Pinker (2004) includes religiousness, liberalism and conservativeness in the list. William Paley considers cognitive capabilities, temperaments and cheating behaviors inheritable.
However, there is strong criticism on this approach.
1- There is no single universal behavior which can be proved evolutionary. Even fear of death, that seems natural to all, is overridden in crusades, suicides and suicide bombings.
2- Personality is Nurtured
This group argues that you don't get your personality inherited. Your mind is a blank slate at your birth. It is your environment, education and culture that make up your behaviors. There are differences on the issue of 'free will' to change your behaviors.
3- People don't differ in behaviors as they do differ in skin pigments. Extroverts, introverts, optimists, pessimists, criminals, liberals etc are found in all societies and cultures. Even identical twins (with 100% similar genes) and fraternal twins (with 50% similar genes) behave differently in most of the cases.
4- No genome scientist has related genes or a set of genes with any kind of behaviors.
5- There are a good number of living organisms and fossils which suggest intermediary stages to the physical evolution. However, no such intermediary stages are available for personality evolution.

Nature VS Nurture Theories and Physics
The discoveries in physics have always provided new meat to the nature vs nurture theories. The conclusions of Newton and Einstein helped the people to believe that future events can be predicted with the help of true knowledge of matter and natural laws. This led psychologists to suggest that your future behaviors can be predetermined. The whole mechanism of psychometrics follows this hypothesis.
However, quantum physics has changed the situation altogether. Evidence proves that you can't make two (almost) simultaneous measurements of observables correctly. 1- Position and momentum of a particle
2- Position and direction of a particle
3- Time and frequency of a sound wave
4- Wavelength and magnitude of a sound wave

What About Environment?

Relativity, Quantum Physics and String Theory

Einstein's theory of general relativity and the theory of quantum mechanics are two widely accepted and experimentally verified theories of physics. There's only one problem. General relativity deals with physics on the macro scale of massive gravitational fields warping the space-time continuum. Quantum mechanics is useful in the description of particle physics and the interactions of matter and energy on extremely small scales.
General relativity describes a smooth continuum of space-time but quantum physics describes distortions of space-time in "quantum foam." Thus these well tested theories mutually exclude one another.
General relativity is used in describing gravitational fields on large scales and so in research it seldom collides with quantum mechanics. An exception to this is black holes where gravity is so strong as to collapse a powerful gravitational field to the micro level.
In the study of black holes the equations of general relativity are joined to those of quantum mechanics and give nonsensical answers.
To resolve this conflict the new and as yet experimentally untested theory called string theory has been advanced.
A thumbnail sketch of string theory is that it maintains that subatomic particles such as electrons are not mere points but are oscillating strings. This assumption, by a bizarre set of steps, eliminates quantum foam.
String theory also contains the unproven idea that the universe consists of nine or ten spatial dimensions in addition to the dimension of time. These extra dimensions are called the hidden dimensions.
Some scientists have unwisely taken opportunity with this developing theory to formulate a theory of cosmology that eliminates the need for God as Creator. Paul J. Steinhardt and Neil G. Turok have developed a theory that claims to show that the universe always existed and is therefore uncreated.
Steinhardt and Turok's complicated theory which I will not describe here does not surmount a fundamental flaw. Their theory ignores the Second Law of Thermodynamics, also called the Law of Entropy.
The Law of Entropy is firmly established in physics and maintains that any isolated system must tend over time to become more disordered and randomized. Thus if the universe were infinitely old it would now be infinitely randomized and disordered and would have suffered heat death trillions of years ago.
Scientists who deny creation will occasionally attempt to second guess or ignore the Second Law but no self respecting physicist will openly deny the Second Law. When cornered they must capitulate and admit that the Second Law of Thermodynamics is operative even in extreme circumstances.
As strange as this may seem, the way unbelieving scientists avoid conflict with the Second Law is to assume that the universe is self created. Scientists, including many 'Big Bang' theorists, who propose that the universe came out of nothing sidestep any conflict with the Second Law of Thermodynamics but fall into a much bigger hole. That hole is "spontaneous generation."
Spontaneous generation is absurd. For the universe to create anything it must first exist. The logical contradiction is obvious and fatal to spontaneous generation.
Given the implications of the Second Law of Thermodynamics we must conclude that if anything exists now it means that something has always existed.

Bachelor Degree - Engineering
A bachelor degree in engineering is not something that is all that easy to get. The sciences are some of the most demanding disciplines of college. So if you're thinking of getting a bachelor degree in engineering, you better be prepared for what's ahead. Hopefully, this article will give you a decent idea of what is required to get that very demanding degree.

In many college curriculums, there is a lot of room for what they call "light" electives. In the case of engineering, or for that matter, any science, this is not so. The course outline for a degree in engineering is quite intense. Your electives are not going to be much easier than your required engineering courses.
Your first year will usually start off with basic introductory engineering courses for the first two semesters. A degree in engineering is a BS degree, which has tougher requirements that a BA degree. The supporting courses are much tougher. In addition to taking your introductory engineering courses in your first two semesters, most colleges will also require you to take two semesters of Calculus or a math equivalent and two semesters of physics. Some colleges will allow you to substitute chemistry for physics. Right there, between just those three courses, is half of your first year in college. You will also be required to take geometry courses as well.
The second year is almost a carbon copy of your first year. You'll be expected to continue with your engineering courses and take the last two semesters of Calculus and physics or chemistry in order to get your core requirements for your science courses. The remainder of the year is dedicated to your electives. Some colleges however, require that you take some kind of mechanical drawing. Engineering requires a lot of drawing so expect to take a lot of these courses throughout your four years.
Now is when it gets a little complicated. See, there are many different types of engineers, such as civil engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, etc. By your third year, most colleges require you to declare which engineering degree you are going for. After you declare this, that's when you get the remainder of your schedule for the last two years. And yes, this schedule will be drastically different based on what type of engineer you want to become because the skill requirements for each type of engineer are quite different. One thing that most people are surprised to hear is that a major requirement of any engineering degree is a basic course in English. Why? Engineers do a lot of writing. Many things need to be communicated in basic English. Because of the advanced nature of this information, or what people call "tech-speak" it is critical that an engineer has a good command of the English language.
Getting a bachelor degree in engineering is not an easy thing to do. But the rewards of getting one are certainly worth the effort it will take to get that piece of paper handed to you at the end of your four years.

Introduction to the Language of Kinematics

A typical physics course concerns itself with a variety of broad topics. One such topic is mechanics - the study of the motion of objects. The first six units of The Physics Classroom tutorial will involve an investigation into the physics of motion. As we focus on the language, principles, and laws which describe and explain the motion of objects, your efforts should center around internalizing the meaning of the information. Avoid memorizing the information; and avoid abstracting the information from the physical world which it describes and explains. Rather, contemplate the information, thinking about its meaning and its applications.

Scalars and Vectors

Physics is a mathematical science. The underlying concepts and principles have a mathematical basis. Throughout the course of our study of physics, we will encounter a variety of concepts which have a mathematical basis associated with them. While our emphasis will often be upon the conceptual nature of physics, we will give considerable and persistent attention to its mathematical aspect.

he motion of objects can be described by words. Even a person without a background in physics has a collection of words which can be used to describe moving objects. Words and phrases such as going fast, stopped, slowing down, speeding up, and turning provide a sufficient vocabulary for describing the motion of objects. In physics, we use these words and many more. We will be expanding upon this vocabulary list with words such as distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration. As we will soon see, these words are associated with mathematical quantities which have strict definitions. The mathematical quantities which are used to describe the motion of objects can be divided into two categories. The quantity is either a vector or a scalar. These two categories can be distinguished from one another by their distinct definitions:

* Scalars are quantities which are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone.
* Vectors are quantities which are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction.

The remainder of this lesson will focus on several examples of vector and scalar quantities (distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration). As you proceed through the lesson, give careful attention to the vector and scalar nature of each quantity. As we proceed through other units at The Physics Classroom Tutorial and become introduced to new mathematical quantities, the discussion will often begin by identifying the new quantity as being either a vector or a scalar.

Distance and Displacement

Distance and displacement are two quantities which may seem to mean the same thing yet have distinctly different definitions and meanings.

* Distance is a scalar quantity which refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion.
* Displacement is a vector quantity which refers to "how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall change in position.

To test your understanding of this distinction, consider the motion depicted in the diagram below. A physics teacher walks 4 meters East, 2 meters South, 4 meters West, and finally 2 meters North.

Even though the physics teacher has walked a total distance of 12 meters, her displacement is 0 meters. During the course of her motion, she has "covered 12 meters of ground" (distance = 12 m). Yet when she is finished walking, she is not "out of place" - i.e., there is no displacement for her motion (displacement = 0 m). Displacement, being a vector quantity, must give attention to direction. The 4 meters east is canceled by the 4 meters west; and the 2 meters south is canceled by the 2 meters north. Vector quantities such as displacement are direction aware. Scalar quantities such as distance are ignorant of direction. In determining the overall distance traveled by the physics teachers, the various directions of motion can be ignored.

Now consider another example. The diagram below shows the position of a cross-country skier at various times. At each of the indicated times, the skier turns around and reverses the direction of travel. In other words, the skier moves from A to B to C to D.

Speed and Velocity

Just as distance and displacement have distinctly different meanings (despite their similarities), so do speed and velocity. Speed is a scalar quantity which refers to "how fast an object is moving." Speed can be thought of as the rate at which an object covers distance. A fast-moving object has a high speed and covers a relatively large distance in a short amount of time. A slow-moving object has a low speed and covers a relatively small amount of distance in a short amount of time. An object with no movement at all has a zero speed.

Velocity is a vector quantity which refers to "the rate at which an object changes its position." Imagine a person moving rapidly - one step forward and one step back - always returning to the original starting position. While this might result in a frenzy of activity, it would result in a zero velocity. Because the person always returns to the original position, the motion would never result in a change in position. Since velocity is defined as the rate at which the position changes, this motion results in zero velocity. If a person in motion wishes to maximize their velocity, then that person must make every effort to maximize the amount that they are displaced from their original position. Every step must go into moving that person further from where he or she started. For certain, the person should never change directions and begin to return to the starting position.

Velocity is a vector quantity. As such, velocity is direction aware. When evaluating the velocity of an object, one must keep track of direction. It would not be enough to say that an object has a velocity of 55 mi/hr. One must include direction information in order to fully describe the velocity of the object. For instance, you must describe an object's velocity as being 55 mi/hr, east. This is one of the essential differences between speed and velocity. Speed is a scalar quantity and does not keep track of direction; velocity is a vector quantity and is direction aware.

Acceleration

The final mathematical quantity discussed in Lesson 1 is acceleration. An often confused quantity, acceleration has a meaning much different than the meaning associated with it by sports announcers and other individuals. The definition of acceleration is:

* Acceleration is a vector quantity which is defined as the rate at which an object changes its velocity. An object is accelerating if it is changing its velocity.
Sports announcers will occasionally say that a person is accelerating if he/she is moving fast. Yet acceleration has nothing to do with going fast. A person can be moving very fast and still not be accelerating. Acceleration has to do with changing how fast an object is moving. If an object is not changing its velocity, then the object is not accelerating. The data at the right are representative of a northward-moving accelerating object. The velocity is changing over the course of time. In fact, the velocity is changing by a constant amount - 10 m/s - in each second of time. Anytime an object's velocity is changing, the object is said to be accelerating; it has an acceleration.

Most Americans have a pretty good understanding of physics. After all, we all understand gravity, and we know what happens when we turn on the stove and boil water. We also know when we go around the corner too fast in our car everything leans to one side. And most young men have played baseball at sometime in their life so they have a pretty good idea of force, power, kinetic energy, and object's trajectory. All this is "physics" of course.

Still, what if you are a scientist and you understand all that but you need to know or all there is to know, all the mathematical formulations and exactly how everything affects everything else in a scientific way? If these are things that you need to know, then perhaps I can recommend a very good book to you. This is a book that I have in my personal library and I use quite often when coming up with new concepts, innovations, or inventions. The name of the book he has;

"Physics for Scientists" by Randall K. Knight.

This is a reference book for Scientists on the realm of physics. It helps scientists so they don't make any mistakes when they're conceiving a new idea or pushing the limits of thought with new concepts. It's a very excellent book and it makes a nice addition to the library for a graduate physics student or someone that has been studying physics all their live and has some revolutionary new ideas.

The book is fully illustrated, and it is very good. I recommend it to anyone that is involved in the scientific fields, even rocket scientists. I hope you will please consider all this.

Range (also known as range lands) is a barren land that is not fit for agriculture and cultivation. Range land is mainly utilized as a source of continuous forage for cattle.
